To Be Deep, that is the Question

Have you ever gone to a club or been to a party and wished the night would never end. "Oh that's my song!!!" Every song that came on this phrase was heard – somebody was doing it that night!

What happens when you’ve never heard the song before? Is the scene not enjoyable? Can the mix still move you to the same degree? Is it possible to hear a song (or two) that you can get into – or is your mood shot because it’s foreign? This is the dilemma I face lately when I'm putting sets together. After DJ'ing for over 20 years I'm still trying to find that next cut I've never played in a mix before; or for that matter, never heard anyone else play…

I hate when people say "now don’t get me wrong…" I do love the classics – but every hotspot and radio show basically sounds the same. Some cats obviously are better than others but the selections are usually and routinely common place. That’s why I go Deep, Deep as I can. I'm trying to find stuff I've never heard, I want to be Deeply Audioly educated.

I certainly am not trying to offend the dedicated party crowd or the casual head nodder by calling their version of "deep" boring. Since there are a million DJ's out there to please the common folk, I will not be offended if listeners prefer them to my style – not in the least. I just ask that if you have ever thought of yourself as a "Deep House" fan, think about what it means to be Deep. Going to depths that are mysterious, ambiguous, and abysmal should be the destination.
